Orlando (AP) Lions general manager Bob Quinn announced Wednesday that the team has acquired cornerback Jordan Willoughby from the Buccaneers for the first- and third-round picks in the 2017 NFL draft.
The Lions are expected to use the picks on two defensive backs, defensive end Anthony Barr and linebacker Justin Durant.
Quinn made it clear that the Lions are not looking for a cornerback.
The team’s top-ranked defense has struggled mightily for years, with only four top-10 defenses in the NFL.
But with the loss of starting cornerback Landon Collins to a season-ending knee injury in 2016, the Lions have struggled at corner in recent years.
The Buccaneers’ cornerback corps, which includes veteran Bashaud Breeland, has been among the league’s worst.
The Bucs had the second-worst pass defense in 2016 and finished the season ranked 28th in DVOA.
The Bucs have a history of drafting and developing players who excel in their particular area of expertise.
Willoughbys defense will likely fit in well with the team’s defensive scheme and will give the Lions depth at cornerback.
